Park vojaške zgodovine Pivka

#Erasmus

Park of Military History Pivka is located in south Slovenia, 45 km from Ljubljana. It’s a former Command Centre from the second Yugoslav state, but today functions as a tourist location for visitors and as a depot of museums. National Museum of Contemporary History has its main depot here. I visited Pivka 2 times. First as part of a one-day trip organized by the local Erasmus Student Network (as a part of the trip we also went to Cross Cave –Križna jama) and the second time with museum staff. The museum depot is too small for all the deposits and exhibits museum has, so the museum slowly transports all to Pivka. In this blog post I will talk about the first visits and my insights.

The visitor part consists of an outside vehicle exhibition and an indoor exhibition of weapons and other vehicles, mostly from the 20th century. This is a war museum, so it consists of exhibits that people with interest in war history are going to like. Weapons, uniforms, tanks, artillery and planes are the overwhelmingly represented. World War II and Yugoslavian war history are also well represented exhibits mentioned above. The museum provided us with a guide who is the best person to show to what kind of people the museum caters to and in the end attracts. His style of guiding was more war history then general, and he expects from his listeners to know in-depth knowledge of tanks and weapons that people, if military history isn’t their niche hobby, don’t know. Since I am one, I wanted to see the response of the audience. They were mostly students from all over Europe here in Ljubljana on Erasmus student exchange program and most of them listened what the guide had to say. Only in the second half of the tour his crowd was smaller. The T34 tank and its ability to deflect rounds fired at him because his armor is slopped is not a topic for everyone. He did throw from time to time a question to keep the audience interested. For Example, related to the T34, he asks how long the tank survived after it was deployed in combat. The answer is 10 minutes, but this incredible information can stick in your brain because he praised the tank before, even calling it the best of the war. It gives a scale to the fact how combat in World War II terrible was and how a 40-ton steel machine with a crew of 4 people like the T34 was expandable. WW I and interwar years are also solidly covered. In 2014 was the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, and interest for its history spiked everywhere, even normal folk start to be more engaged. So museums and historians adapted to the trend and started to research its history more. More or less, each history or military museum now has a corner dedicated to the First World War.

The second part of the exhibition is for people who did not come to see tanks only. It is the history of Tito’s Yugoslavia and Slovenian history since it came independent in 1991. The guide offered more general information. The exhibits were interesting and easier to understand. Good example is a typical furnished living room in the 1991 that had a broadcast on his black and white television about the declaration of Slovenian independence. The last part of the exhibition are planes and tanks again, Slovenian modern army. It is interesting to see how at the beginning most of the equipment Slovenian army had was Soviet and was inherited from the old state, and how the newest stuff is all western and modern, according to NATO standards. It nicely shows Slovenian transformation from being a part of a socialist state in multinational Yugoslavia into Independent state that is a member of the west.

I would like to also address other parts of the museum, like the shop and restaurant. The shop is big and it has classical souvenirs, books, military apparel and scale models, which I am always, glad to see. Since I was 16, I like to build and paint scale models, especially tanks, and I consider it as sort of a on and off hobby, since my life in the last 2 years included a lot of traveling and working, there was no time for scale modeling. I still have a big interest for the hobby, but I just don’t have time for it. Usually the scale model prices in museums are museumesqe and here was no exception. It is much cheaper to buy them online with shipping included. The restaurant was nicely decorated in traditional style. I did not eat myself, but judging by the praises of food made by the whole tour, I think you are safe to give it a try. Lastly, museum is located in a hilly area, so the view from the museum is really nice, but also very windy, beware.

Pivka Museum for fans military history is a must see. In my opinion it is worth the travel from Ljubljana if it is your niche. The museum is rich in content and is clearly handled by people who love their job. For foreigners there are enough planes and tanks to see, but the mix of both western and eastern military equipment is what really makes it worth.

Park smo si ogledali skupaj z vodičem, s katerim smo skupaj odkrivali vse tisto, ker obiskovalce najbolj privlači. Pravzaprav je to razmislek o grozljivih bojih v času druge svetovne vojne in vlogi 40. tonskega jeklenega stroja s posadko štirih ljudi.
